Blandy`s winery: fantastic Madeira wine museum in the center of Funchal and an oppertunity to taste the best Madeira wines.
Blandy's wine company was established in the beginning of the 19th century by Blandy family from Britain. Seven generations of the members of this family own this business for more than two centuries.
Blandy's Wine Lodge is located in the historic part of Funchal and offers a variety of guided tours to their wine museum. Such tours allow to visit different areas of the Lodge, to know how Madeira wine is being made, to understand the difference between the sorts of grapes that are being cultivated for Madeira wine production and to enjoy the specific smell of a Madeira wine cellar. All tours are followed by wine tasting. After the tasting you may buy the wine you like. The prices in the Lodge are quite moderate despite the fact that the whole thing is espesially launched for tourists. If you taste a wine that is not included into the ticket and then decide to buy it, the tasting is free. You may also have a tasting without a tour, but it is not free.
D`Oliveira's winery: free wine tasting and traditional Madeira honey cake.
D'Oliveira winery is also located in the historic part of the city. There are no giuded tours there but you may visit this winery in order to enjoy free wine tasting in a quite nice old-fashioned wine hall among the oak barrels. As the basic option, they offer four different kinds of 3-year-old Madeira wine (dry, medium-dry, medium-sweet and sweet), but an interested and experienced visitor may have a chance to taste a 15-year old or even a vintage wine. Madeira wine is perfectly accompanied by the traditional honey cake (bolo do miel), that is also offered in d'Oliviera's. Wine prices there are also quite reasonable.
Both winaries are worth visiting, but we suggest that you visit them not in one day.
